Art trip
24 - 27 May 2018

Be inspired by a journey to discover the current local art scene in Amsterdam and The Hague

Amsterdam is not only home to Rembrandt's "Night Watch" and a city of canals, cyclists and liberal lifestyles. It is the official capital of the Netherlands, a cosmopolitan trading metropolis and it was the cradle of the modern art market four hundred years ago. In recent years, a lively art scene has developed here. The new hotspot is the hip Amsterdam Noord. Once the largest shipyard in Europe, tankers and passenger ships were launched here; today the location is a place where artists have their studios, startups have settled and chic restaurants, galleries and cafes have opened.
From the centre we will take the ferry to the NSDM Wharf - the name of the shipyard district - and visit artists in their studios located there. Then we will see the architecturally masterful EYE film museum - a building that itself is like a sculpture. The next day we continue to The Hague - the seat of parliament, the government and the royal house - and visit one of the most fascinating artists in the country, Folkert de Jong, in his studio. His installations and sculptures of bronze and of plastics such as polystyrene foam and polyurethane play with historical and modern myths. In the afternoon you will experience a special type of self-promotion for artists: the producer gallery Pulchri, located in the heart of The Hague in a beautiful palace. In the midst of beautiful gardens designed by the trendy landscape architect Piet Oudolf, between dunes and forests, the Museum Voorlinden also awaits our visit. Again, world-renowned works such as James Turrell's fixed "Skyspace", Ron Mueck's "Couple Under an Umbrella", Richard Serra's "Open Ended" and installations by Roni Horn guarantee that sculpture enthusiasts will get their money's worth.
In just three days, you'll get a glimpse of one of Europe's most exciting art scenes - a city that never sleeps and that is creatively innovative and full of youthful vigour.
