KölnSkulptur (CologneSculpture)#6

Florian Slotawa, "Kölner Reihe", 2011

With KölnSkulptur # 6, the sixth staging of outdoor sculptures in the Sculpture Park in Cologne will be opened on 15 May 2011. The Foundation Sculpture Park Cologne thus continues the exhibition series KölnSkulptur (1997, 1999, 2001, 2007, 2009) initiated by the founders of the Park, Michael and Eleonore Stoffel. The exhibition KölnSkulptur # 6 shows the Cologne Sculpture Park in a completely new light: the park has been expanded and can be experienced in many ways through different lines of sight and different paths.

The focus of the redesign is a garden pavilion of the Japanese architect Sou Fujimoto, which represents a polar opposite to the newly accessible Foundation building with its size, shape and orientation. This Garden Gallery is in the tradition of classical park architecture, and is the starting point for the works already in the park that deal with themes of architecture, such as the existing sculptures by Jorge Pardo, Heimo Zobernig or Dan Graham. In line with this orientation of sculpture in the park as a topic determined by architecture, new works by Olaf Holzapfel and Bernard Voïta can be seen.

The curator of KölnSkulptur # 6 is Dr. Friedrich Meschede. From 1989 to 1992, he was Director of the Westphalian Art Association, Munster, and subsequently took over the direction of the International Artists' Programme of the DAAD in Berlin for 16 years. From 2008 to early 2011 he was head of contemporary exhibitions at the Museu d'Art Contemporani, Barcelona. Currently, he curates several exhibition projects of contemporary art in Germany. In March 2011, with effect from 1 July 2011, he was appointed Artistic Director and Managing Director of the Kunsthalle Bielefeld.
