MADRID ART WEEK

sculpture network visit Arco

From 16 to 20 February, Madrid becomes Europe’s art capital. Five art fairs and around 150 art exhibitions in museums, foundations, art centres etc. Absolutely Impossible to see it all, but we try hard. Here is a brief report on sculpture during this week.

Starting with a sculpture network visit to the Fundación Santander http://www.fundacionbancosantander.com to see their open air sculpture collection (Richard Deacon, Richard Serra, Cristina Iglesias, Anish Kapoor Dan Graham ..) and the temporary exhibition from the Sandretto Re-Rebaudengo (Turin) contemporary art collection. www.fsrr.org

On the same day another group of sculpture network members and friends were invited to visit of the CAPA Foundry http://www.capaesculturas.com/fundicion/index.php and Eduardo Capa’s private sculpture collection.

Madrid’s major fair is ARCO, followed by Art Madrid, Just Madrid DeArte and Flecha. This year was ARCO’s 30th anniversary happily, it closed with a positive balance for galleries, collectors, artists, professionals and general public.

There had been much expectation because of the fair’s new director Javier Urroz. A noticeable presence of foreign as well as national collectors gave the fair a "healthy" buzz, much awaited by Spain’s market – normally dependant on institutional purchasing. The optimism that prevailed indicates a recovery of confidence reflected by the general whisper "good sales".

Whether intended or not, ARCO celebrated its 30th birthday with what seems to be a certain "tendency" in the market – sculpture! As certain experts pointed out, after buying trends have focused on painting, photography and video-art, it now seems to be the time for three dimensions and their palpable, tangible qualities.

Let’s hope this is all good news for the art world especially sculpture.
