Neuland enters the Daetz Center near Chemnitz. The exceptional location for wood art will hold an exhibition for the first time starting in July, directed both at visually impaired and non-impaired. "Touch - the tangibly different exhibition" presents 28 sculptures and five reliefs from wood sculptors and creators which are deliberately intended to be touched. The exhibition is under the aegis of Stephan Pöhler, the commissioner for the interests of the disabled for the State of Saxony.

The jury selected from more than 80 submissions. "You can see that a particular approach is necessary when creating a piece of art which is artistically interesting both for individuals with no handicap as well as for those with visual impairment," said the architect Susanne Trabandt, a member of the jury. Particularly in terms of works with lots of contrast, the jury valued pieces which attracted guests with extreme visual impairment. Art is a sensual experience, and the loss of one sense represents a considerably restrictions on daily life. Offering quality of life in the context of artistic mediation is a challenge for artistic efforts to integrate people with disabilities.

The three-dimensionality of wood sculpture offers an exceptional opportunity to make art accessible. At the same time, the exhibition should be interesting for people with no handicap as well. By means of special aids, the change in perspective created by these visual impairments becomes understandable. In terms of additional criteria, the selected works have not previously been exhibited in the Daez Center, but  otherwise no thematic restrictions were placed on the numerous submissions.

The project is supported through the county directorate Chemnitz, the Kulturraum Vogtland-Zwickau, the Sparkasse Chemnitz and the KMZ Kullen-Müller-Zinser as well as the Förderverein Daetz-Centrum Lichtenstein e.V.

The Daetz Centre is located in the hart of Saxony between Zwickau and Chemnitz. Here in the palace von Lichtenstein, one of the most curious standing exhibitions in Germany is hidden. "Masterpieces in wood" presents mroe than 550 pieces from five continents, united by one thing: they are created of wood and are the result of masterful woodcraft. Complemented by an audio guide system, films, pictures, and traditional music, the masterpieces from 35 countries provide impressions of known and foreign cultures. Additionally, special exhibitions highlight different aspects of wood art.
