The Museion - Museum for modern and contemporary art in Bolzano devotes itself to the American artist’s first solo exhibition in Italy.
Over the last two years, the Museion has engaged more closely with the art form of sculpture. With the retrospective of Carl Andre and the curators Roland Mönig and Letizia Ragaglia, Director of the Museum, in collaboration with the Museum Kurhaus Kleve, achieved another great show.
More than 20 works by the internationally renowned artist, considered the founder of minimal art, have been on display since mid-September in the Museion in Bolzano. Large installations extend over two floors, as well as small and medium-sized works that have been created since the 1950s and come from private and public collections.
Andre was instrumental in shaping the development of sculpture in the second half of the 20th century with his dedication to the fundamental and the realization that "it is my vocation to make cuts into the space with my materials and not to cut into the space of my materials."
The artist wants to make his installations into tangible places, so visitors to the exhibition can also walk on steel plates (Napoli Square, 2010) or to move between the three pyramids of wood (Glärnisch, Urn and Star, 2001). In addition to works in the museum rooms, one of his best known installations "Spine" of the year 1984 will be in the public space in front of the Museion. The Bolzano exhibition also shows the "Poems", authored by Carl Andre as well as the artists' books he created.
