Anish Kapoor is known for his sensual and seductive sculptures of tactile materials such as pigment, stone, polished stainless steel, and wax.
The exhibition focuses on colour as the core element of his work, with pure, bright pigment or even its absence. From small, intimate pieces to large-scale works of almost four meters’ height, this is the first survey of Kapoor's work in the UK outside of London. In the Manchester Art Gallery, visitors have the unique opportunity to explore Kapoor's earlier work alongside his current work, borrowed directly from the artist. Additionally, there is a selection of sculptures on loan from collections and the British Arts Council Collection itself The traveling exhibition will be in Manchester in the Nottingham Castle Museum & Art Gallery (19 November 2011-11 March 2012) and in the Longside Gallery, Yorkshire Sculpture Park (16 June to 4 November 2012). An illustrated catalog accompanies the exhibition. The Arts Council Collection The Arts Council Collection is one of the leading collections of post-war British art. The collection does not have a gallery, but can be seen in museums, galleries, schools, hospitals, universities and nonprofit organizations in exhibitions at home and abroad. Founded in 1946, the collection promotes and acquires works by British artists at an early stage of those careers. It includes works by Francis Bacon, Tracey Emin, Lucian Freud, Antony Gormley, Barbara Hepworth, David Hockney, Anish Kapoor, Henry Moore, Bridget Riley and Wolfgang Tillmans. www.artscouncilcollection.org.uk 5 March - 5 June 2011 Manchester Art Gallery, Mosley Street, Manchester M2 3JLwww.manchestergalleries.org
