Marlborough Gallery - Madrid is currently showing their winter sculpture collection (ES)

Antonio López: Carmen dormida 2007; bronce, ed. de 3; 244 x 196 x 241 cm.

This exhibition brings together 12 artists who have each created bodies of work known internationally for their singular and independent vision. Collectively these artists’ oeuvre spans the breadth of twentieth and twenty-first century sculpture, exploring new aesthetic ground and looking to define new categories of sculptural experience and expression.

Our member Magdalena Abakanowicz is taking part with her piece Osiel (2005) a piece which references the human figure and metaphorically express spiritual and philosophical search.

The other artists in the show are: Roberto Barni, Alberto Corazón, Martín Chirino, John Davies, Juan Genovés, Kcho, Francisco Leiro, Antonio López, Blanca Muñoz, Tom Otterness, David Rodriguez Caballero y Manolo Valdés.

The "Colonna bisbetica" of Roberto barni (Pistoia, Italy, 1939) confronts the viewer with questions of human condition, represented by a Bronze column of anonymous men wandering in space, in a precarious equilibrium.

Alberto heart (Born 1942) focuses on human representation Iberian Torso, a wooden sculpture which delves into harmony according to the  Renaissance canon of proportions. Thus reflecting harmony (and also the disharmony) of reality today.

The omnipresence of wind, spirals and iron create Martín Chirino’s  (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, 1925) personal poetic sculpture. A personal, reflection full of meaning constitute "Homenaje – from the series Marinetti XV" exhibited in the show.

Initially inspired by the metaphysical art De Chirico and the theatre of absurd-John Davies (Cheshire, 1946), now focuses on the human figure portraying his vision of life and art.

The painter Juan Genovés (Valencia, 1930) shows his sculptural works "Enrejados", in which dynamic anonymous existence is dominated by indomitable oppressive forces and is pushed to an unexpected situation of alienation.

Kcho - R.E.C.Alexis Leyva Machado (Nueva Gerona, Isla de la Juventud, Cuba, 1970), presents his usual themes – migration and the sea, with his personal poetic vision of the precarious. A notion of rootlessness  which serves as a metaphor for deep frustration.

Francisco Leiro’s (Cambados, Pontevedra, 1957) universe deals with the tragic and comic of life. His wood and bronze sculptures achieve a sense of gravity with lightness.

The world of Antonio López García (Tomelloso, 1936), centres on family and the everyday. The pieces on show depict members of his family. His baby granddaughter in a monumental bronze "sleeping Carmen"; also in much smaller format in lead and alabaster. And "Mari", a bronze bust with meticulous detail and a deep observation.

Blanca Muñoz (Madrid, 1963) plays on the ethereal. Her sculptures give little sense of gravity. Recently, her work has shown an interest focused on more organic forms inspired by nature "Trebol and Cueva de Montesinos".

Tom Otterness (Kansas, USA, 1952) has always been interested in cartoons. The work on show is a mix of apparent formal simplicity and social and political criticism. He manages, however, to portray his ideas with a child's innocenced.

"Four seasons" is a group of curved, aluminium rods which remind us of . David Rodríguez Caballero’s (1970) metal crafting roots. Worked on a large scale, the spectator is obliged to walk around the piece to appreciate the whole.

Manolo Valdés(Valencia, 1942) shows a special inclination towards the exploration of materials, in search of more informal textures. He looks for their natural colours and idiosyncrasies. As the artist explains: "I am interested in textures. Once the volume is made, I explore the surface topographically ".
