Neus Bergua organised a visit for a group of members and friends to urban sculpture projects by Ricardo Vaccaro and the estate ?La Ricarda? built in 1953 by GATCPAC architect Antoni Bonet I Castellana.
We were accompanied by the sculptor, the current owner of the estate Marita Gomis Bertrand and art historian, curator and sculpture network member Rosa María Subirana.
At the foot of ?Homenatge a Joan Miró?, Ricardo Vaccaro explained the different problems that arise when constructing such monumental art and specifically those concerning his piece. As it was built before the surrounding buildings it is a clear example of how art articulates an urban space, gives meaning and a cultural reference point. Another interesting fact he explained was councils? unwillingness to commission pieces with water, grass etc, elements that create maintenance costs when the piece is finished. Does this induce limited creativity in public art?
The Ricarda Estate, is an example of rationalist architecture built in the 50?s, which many architecture students visit. Unfortunately, what was once a prime location right on the sea front, amongst pine trees and sand dunes, it is right next to Prat Airport runways. The house still reflects, however, the original dream of creating a home where art flourished and was shared with visitors.
