Five years ago, the collector Marina Grützmacher took over the gallery spaces in the Bernusstraße in Frankfurt's Westend as gallery owner. The gallery consists of several rooms on three levels, which are surrounded by a sculpture garden. Since its opening in 1989, the gallery was lead by René Reichard and G.-J. Hagemeier, who specialized in works of the classical modern.
Together with experts such as art professor Christa Lichtenstern from Berlin and renowned gallery owners such as the Mannheim gallery owner Dr. Friedrich Kasten, Marina Grützmacher today brings Contemporary works in the fields of photography, painting and sculpture in their premises togehter. "Common to the works exhibited is that figuratives are still integrated. Otherwise, I just have to go by my feeling about the work and the artist," said Marina Grützmacher, quite straightforwardly. Sometimes she wonders whether she should follow the art market and its assessments more intensively. But ultimately she knows that she invests heart and soul into the matter - and always will. What is important to you - and thus also for the artists - are the contacts that she and her husband, lawyer and collector Dr. Rolf Grützmacher, have developed over decades with other collectors and buyers.
From the beginning, Marina Grützmacher has been a sculpture network member, since she is aware of the need to support such initiatives.
She passionately imparts her knowledge of the artists and their works. After all, she learns a lot about the exhibited artists with whom she maintains close contact and whose work she exhibits every two years. This long-standing collaboration with the artists is important, so that at 4 - 6 exhibitions annually leave little room left for new entries in the gallery's portfolio. This is deliberate, and also why she values the targeted advice of selected experts and gallery owners as well as the recommendations of the artists already exhibiting to find new discoveries.
While the first rooms on the ground floor of the bungalow show the current exhibition of one or more artists, individual works of previously exhibited artists from different genres are presented on the other floors. "The sculpture has its place in any exhibition. I think it's actually easier to exhibit new sculptures as it is to hang new pictures. I can’t really understand buyers’ complaints of the difficulty in dealing with sculptures out of space concerns," said the gallery owner.
Out of the original intention to be a temporary gallery director in 2005, for Marina Grützmacher, the gallery has become more than a full-time job. With many events, film screenings and lectures, she has kept the art space in Bernusstraße active. And everyone who enters the gallery can be sure of the friendly advice and guidance of the charming gallery owner.
