The Silent Evolution by Jason deCaires Taylor
The underwater museum, the Museo de Arte Subaquatico (MUSA) in the waters off Cancun, Isla Mujeres and Punta Nizuc in Mexico, took its first steps in 2009. The giant sculpture project is based on collaboration among the National Marine Park, the Nautical Club Cancun and the sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor. Over 400 life-size figurative sculptures create one of the largest and most ambitious underwater attractions in the world. The first 200 pieces were installed in July 2010, and since November, the underwater park is now complete.
Each sculpture is made of a material that promotes coral deposits. Overall, the sculptures extend over an area of over 420 square meters of barren ocean floor and form a weight of about 180 tons. The Marine Park Cancun is one of the busiest waters in the world with over 750,000 visitors per year. The location of the sculpture promotes the development of natural reefs and relieves the reefs in other places, where it strongly draws visitors’ attention.
The third phase of the museum will begin in 2011. More sculptural installations by local and international artists are expected.
In 2006, Jason deCaires Taylor created an underwater sculpture park in the West Indies on an area of 800 square meters with 65 sculptures.
