Volker Kauder, Chairman of the CDU / CSU parliamentary group, is supporting a benefit campaign in his constituency initiated by the city of Tuttlingen. All profit will be donated to cover the medical needs of children in South Africa, a part of the aid project "We are helping Africa". Volker Kauder personally contacted artists and asked for their help by submitting artworks for an auction.
Sculptor Peter Lenk, known for his provocative and satirical sculptures, created for the fundraiser a 1.70-meter Kauder figure in stone, dancing in a banana skirt, entitled "Kauder Dances for Africa".
Whether Volker Kauder?s request of Peter Lenk was based on courage or ignorance, remains open. Judging by previous works by Lenk, such as the triptych "Ludwigs Heritage", which is on display in Bodman-Ludwigshafen am Bodensee until the autumn of 2010, and other political sculptures involving nudity and making fun of the character of politicians, always ensuring a sensation, the satire was to be expected. But Kauder is in good company; other famous ?victims? are, for example: Rudolf Scharping, Angela Merkel, Gerhard Schroeder and many others.
As a child of the 60s, Lenk makes no secret of the fact that this project alone is insufficient, and that government policy towards developing countries must change. Nevertheless, Lenk said that, "rather than spreading tear-jerking moral views? he would prefer to express himself through satire.
The donated artworks will be on exhibit from the 26th to the 30th of April in the Halls of Tuttlingen and will later be auctioned off via internet. Let's see what the dancing Kauder is worth!
