At the 3rd of April 2011, the Chinese artist Ai Weiwei was arrested by the border police on Beijing's airport. The most important Chinese contemporary artists was locked up for two and half months in prison. Even after his release from prison, the Chinese government monitors Ai Weiwei at every turn. Ai Weiwei may not leave the country so he can’t take up his professorship in Berlin. His work is monitored, censored and blocked, moreover he may not give interviews.

Ai Weiwei must be able to work without paternalism, dependency, coercion and sanctions.
