The arctic is melting even more dramatic than we thought. In order to visualise this WWF and several Berliners and visitors placed 1.000 handmade ice figures on the steps of the concert hall at the Gendarmenmarkt. The small fragile sculptures made by Brazilian artist Néle Azevedo melt down within 30 minutes of being place on the steps. They are supposed to remind us of how fragile our nature is and what threat we are to it.
The campaign took place on 2nd September 2009 while the WWF was publishing a new case study on the theme arctic and climate change. The survey shows how important the arctic is for our climate and what the influences are.
The artist Néle Azevedo lives and works in Sao Paulo. She showed her ice sculptures ?Monumento Minimo?, which where originally supposed to be a critical approach to the monuments of urban living, in Brasil, France, Japan, Italy. The ice sculptures where last shown in 2008 in Fiorentina on the Piazza Santissima Annunziata. At the art campaign several visitors and by passers where included. They had to carry the fragile sculptures from the fridges to the steps.
