?Second Wind 2005? by James Turrell (USA) in the Fundación NMAC, Vejer de la Frontera (Cádiz), Spain

James Turrell, ?Second Wind 2005?, 2009

In 2006 when James Turrell fist visited the Kunststiftung NMAC he was thrilled to realise a project there. ?I will give new value to something which is freely accessible ? natural light. We hardly acknowledge its value because it never runs out? he said.

After 3 years of building the light-room-installation ?Second Wind 2005? will be opened this summer and should be a special occasion. Like other Turrell installations (e.g. ?Dear Shelter? or ?Skyspace?) they are very contemplative especially because only a few people can access it at a time.

At the Fundación NMAC the access is possible through a tunnel. You will find yourself under the mountain in a pyramid which is open to the top. Passing a hemisphere you can notice interesting light constellations: the sky ,the reflection in the water and the colours, which are constantly changing. Crossing a bridge you will find yourself within the sphere which has a round opening to the top. There are benches place around the sphere where the spectator can just admire the shapes etc. The colours get more intense, you can hear sounds, the sky seems to be so close. Is it an illusion? If the spectator lets this sink in he will understand Turrells statement:

?I don?t solely concentrate on the object, the object itself is the perception. Secondly I don?t concern myself with a picture, because I want to avoid associative and symbolic thinking. Thirdly I don?t pursue any intentions, not even a certain view. Without object, picture, and intentions ? what do you see? You see yourself.? James Turrell

James Turrell (1943 in Los Angeles) is an American artist who became known for his room-light installations. His most famous project which he works on since 1974 is ?Roden Crater?. Like all Turrell installations it is a new way of seeing things.
