A plea for three-dimensional art!
The first Winterthur Sculpture Symposium was held in summer 2009 and was a great success. More than 5,500 art lovers visited the exhibition in just three months. The impact of the symposium was well extended beyond the District's borders to Basel, St. Gallen and in southern Germany.
The second Sculpture Symposium, from 28 May to 28 August 2011, will again provide valuable input to the discussion of contemporary artists. Visitors can experience a wide range of outdoor three-dimensional works, from classical sculpture made of wood to metal sculptures, walk-in installations and light objects. The variety of works presented is intended to initiate a consciousness process and promote understanding of new artistic forms of expression.
The Biennale takes place in the charming little park of the local culture centre, Weiertal, in Winterthur. A cultural program frames the sculpture exhibition. In three discussion forums, the latest trends of three-dimensional art are illuminated, casting a look behind the scenes of collections and engaging critically with art awards and competitions.
The 23 projects which were made specifically for the site have been selected from 100 applications, including our members René Küng and Jürgen Stäheli. The works are now presented on the site among ponds, streams, fruit trees, lawns and pavillions.
The new catalog with the documentation of the current works will be released early July.
