"Show me your car and I tell you who you are.”
For many people their car is an extension of themselves and therefore so often discussed. The Rotterdam-based artist Olaf Mooij, who has achieved particular fame with his car sculptures in public space, transforms vehicles into "living" beings. With a personality, with hairstyles, with enlargement of parts.
In his recent series of work, at BIS71, the car sculptures no longer have a functional use, but serve only as a reminder of the modes of transport. Compact rubber forms without wheels are waiting for their birth. A flesh-colored carskin of what once could have been an estate car lies folded on the ground. The work presents itself as a fossil remnant of a distant past. The humorous sculptures relativize the contemporary relationship of the human being to machines and the devices that surround him. In Temple of Doom the art works turn into a sacred place: does our car obsession lead to destruction?
