Tony Cragg is among the most important sculptors today. The MdM MÖNCHSBERG shows 120 exhibits of Tony Cragg which date back to the seventies, as well as several sculptures which originated since the year 2000. There is also a sculpture terrace which hosts 4 more sculptures.
Craggs ductile oeuvre took first impulses from the argument of the English landscape and body conscious working methods. It can be distinguished by its immense opulence in finding new forms and constellations which also reflect in his drawings.
Cragg describes himself as a materialist who seeks the possibility of enhancing the knowledge of his often new working materials. Stacking, layering and clustering ? these are the strategies, which he uses in order to reform old materials and commodities into surprising shapes.
Tony Cragg reflects in his work time and space, with movement and presence and everything else which has to do with liveliness. The concept of energy is very important for Craggs drawings. The exhibition gives an impression of how Cragg has been inspired by his surroundings.
Drawing and sculpture are very autonomic ins his work ? still there are relations visable between both sectors which enables the viewer to find a constant. The exhibitions runs from 04.07. ? 11.10.2009. There is a catalogue available published by Dumont. The exhibition has been shown at the Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe first and has been modified for Salzburg.
