Castello di Rivoli - Museum of Contemporary Art (I)

Castello di Rivoli

The Castello di Rivoli was opened in 1984 under the guidance of Rudi Fuchs. It is known to be one of the leading institutions of contemporary art in Italy. It offers an insight into Italian contemporary art starting from 1950 onwards.

Since 1999 the CRT foundation Turin is involved in expanding the acceptance of contemporary art in the Turin area. The focus was on the construction of the two institutions Castello di Rivoli and the Civic gallery of modern and contemporary art Turin. The collections of both institutions focused on figurative paintings of Italian artists since WWII. Many pieces have been bought over the years: for example of the Arte povera, the Transavanguardia, Italian paintings of the 50?s and 60?s and Italian sculptures of the post war era.

Today the collection presents unique pieces of the Italian art from the second half of the 20th century. Years later they also started collecting pieces from non Italian artists, as well as pieces from temporary exhibitions some of them especially made for the museum. The collection consists of almost 180 pieces, which are shared between both museums.

Up to date news: Jens Hoffmann of Germany and the Italian Andrea Bellini have been appointed artistic chiefs for the museum of contemporary art Castello di Rivoli. Jens Hoffmann is therefore leaving the Wattis institute for contemporary art San Francisco. Before Hoffmann was chief of the Institute contemporary arts (ICA) in London.

Andrea Bellini born in Latina (near Rome) in 1971 was involved with the art fair for contemporary art Artissima in Turin. Former New-York correspondent for the Italian art magazine ?Flash Art? was able to make a name for himself as curatorial adviser at the P.S.1 Contemporary Art centre, a branch of the MoMA New York in Queens.
