The Fundación Canal presents a selection of sculptures of Jorge Oteiza (1908 - 2003) curated by the niece of the artist, Pilar Oteiza. Jorge Oteiza is considered to be one of the most notable Basque artists of the twentieth century and has been a pioneer in Spain?s abstract art.
The exhibition shows 34 sculptures, among them 4 monumental sculptures who have been installed in the outskirt area of the foundation, and gives an overview of the artist?s most important creative periods. It illustrates his first geometric experiments with spherical forms, demonstrates his subsequent examination with cubical forms and finishes with his lost working period which he dedicated to the so called ?Cajas Metafísicas?.
His mostly geometrical sculptures in iron and stone found buyers throughout the world. He called himself ?biologist of space? because the main element of his work is the void in his writings, he again referred to as "spatial vacant".
The title of the exhibition "Los límites de la transparencia? plays in on the border where the constructed and natural space meet. The works correspond with the height of the project "Experimental purpose" for which Jorge Oteiza received the first prize for sculpture at the Biennale of São Paulo (Brazil) in 1957. For his work he was also awarded the International Sculpture Prize (1957) and the Prince of Asturias Prize (1988). In the Basque region of Navarre the museum Jorge Oteiza www.museooteiza.org is located with a comprehensive retrospective.
Duration of exhibition: 25 February ? 25 April 2010
