Human Comfort is Rob Voerman?s first individual exhibition in a museum in the Netherlands. In this comprehensive retrospective, Voerman exhibits works from 1998 until present, as well as the new installation, Cinema, which he developed exclusively for the Cobra Museum in Amstelveen. Rob Voerman enjoys international recognition, with recent exhibitions in London, Vienna, and Berlin, and his work is included in important international collections. The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Generali Foundation and the Deutsche Bank have all recently acquired pieces of his work. The Cobra Museum exhibits a multitude of smaller and larger installations.
Over the past decade, Voerman has realized multiple installations and works on paper. He creates differing forms of fictive architecture, where romanticized buildings and landscapes stand in contrast to destruction, horror and menace. Voerman?s large new installation Cinema was developed specifically for the exhibition. A white construction is reminiscent of a villa; surrounding the construction is a dwelling of wood, cardboard, and tinted glass. Cinema is evocative of a homeless shelter.
Rob Voerman?s architectural constructions are made of organic and scavenged material> cardboard, discarded wood, found objects, etc. His watercolours, prints and installations present fictional architecture apart or in an urban environment. His works evoke alienation in our contemporary environment. Romanticism is combined with the dark side of life in this society. Voerman?s architecture is not functional. The hybrid structures suggest ruins of modernity. The post-apocalyptic world of Rob Voerman is full of contrasts: archaic versus futuristic, romanticising and yet dangerous, nature and technology, utopia and dystopia in one. In such undefined places we seek protection and security: that to which the exhibition?s title refers.
