The Swiss gallery- and museum founder died in February in Basel at the age of 88. The art dealer and his wife Hildy were both involved in the construction of the Museum Fondation Beyeler, which opened in 1997. His own collection of over 200 pieces of classical modern art was converted to a foundation in 1982. The pair were among the founding members of the art convention Art Basel. No other art collector is as much to thank for so many first-class pieces from Picasso, Matisse, Klee, Kandinsky, Giacometti, Lichtenstein, and others in the world?s large museums as Beyeler. In over 60 years of trading art, Ernst Beyeler has created over 60 exhibitions according to the Fondation Beyeler. In total, Beyeler is reputed to have procured over 16,000 pieces.
