The Yorkshire Sculpture Park is a unique place. It inspires, informs, and uplifts spirits. With four galleries and a one-of-a-kind car park from the 18th century, the Sculpture Park today is an international center of modern and contemporary art, well-known and ?loved by the thousands of visitors it sees per year.
The current and already extended exhibition from Peter Randall-Page introduces his new sculpture and paper works. Peter Randall-Page, one of England?s leading sculptors, uses the large premesis of the Underground Gallery for works reflecting his approach and development of ideas over several years. The new pieces, including works from his most recent series of fired clay, stem from two monumental blocks of Kilkenny limestone. The Garden Gallery, for its part, shows smaller objects and his paper works. Together with the selected large-format sculptures in the open spaces surrounding the Underground Gallery, the entire exhibition forms a unique unit.
Randall-Page?s work is based off of a lifelong study of the organic form. The complexity of nature is the source of his work and continues to fascinate him, such as how the basic mathematic principles determine life and the form it takes. Randall-Page references music, knowledge of the antique and the natural sciences, paritcularly botany. He has an unstillable thirst for knowledge and a desire to explore the details of our natural world.
Peter Randall-Page created two limited editions especially for the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, which are now available in the YSP Store. His works already form part of important international collections, such as the Tate Gallery, the British Museum, Oxford University, the Contemporary Art Society and the British Council.
'Our most intimate understanding of three-dimensional form comes from our own and other people?s bodies. When we look around the world we see the outside of something and wonder what might be inside. I try to tap into this, implying from the modulations of a surface what may be happening inside ? a delicate balancing act. The illusion has to be consistent, just like a fictional world. It?s a parallel world. The illusion I?m talking about has to understand itself and have a metaphorical relevance to our world'. Peter Randall-Page
Extended until April 11th, 2010 | open daily from 10:00 AM until 4:00 PM

STONE in the Bothy Gallery of the YSP
The exhibition of the Project STONE will also be taking place until May 3rd 2010 in the Bothy Gallery of the YSP.
STONE was initiated by the Edinburgh College of Art to explore the techniques of sculpture creation. The cooperation of international artists allowed the collection of a unique archive of information which would otherwise have been lost. The exhibition presents a selection of objects, film documents and photographs.
The project also consists of practical work with stone in contemporary art. This past August, ten artists worldwide worked on new pieces, each out of a block of stone measuring one square (cubic?) meter. These sculptures created the outdoor element of the exhibition. These artists included our member Susanne Specht, and pieces from artists such as Joel Fisher, Hayashi Takeshi, Jess Harrison, Jake Harvey, Carlos Lizaraturry Moro, Gerard Mas, Atsuo Okamoto, Peter Randall-Page, Sibylle Pasche and Daniel Silver were also displayed.
