The museums of the city Heilbronn often focus on ?Sculpture? and thus create surprising exhibitions. The curator of the art and sculpture museums Dieter Brunner just had a new Brilliant idea: he picked the topic about the base of art.
In cooperation with Arie Hartog (Gerhard-Marcks-House Bremen) and Oliver Kornhoff (Arp Museum Bahnhof Rolandseck) they show the development of the base during the 20th century. For the first time the development of the base of traditional sculpture is shown in an exhibition. Rodin and Brancusi were the first who put their focus on the base, which before just had a minor role in sculpturing.
The base was put into focus during the 20th century as a formal part and important aspect of modern sculptures. This exhibition aims to bring these facts to a broader audience with respective to one of the most important sculptors of the century Alberto Giacometti.
Taking examples from 50 art projects and positions the theme is put into a new light. The exhibition shows how the base freed itself from common perspectives of the earlier ages and how artists achieved to create new ways to implement the aspects of bases to their work. The visitor will see all different kind of bases, how they have been developed and the changes it went through, throughout the decades of the 20th century.
As usual the exhibition is accompanied by an extensive catalogue, which also focuses on modern aspects of the theme:
