11th Small Sculpture Fellbach Triennale 2010 (D)

Tessa Farmer: "The Resurrection of the Rat", 2008

LARGER THAN LIFE - STRANGER THAN FICTION

On Saturday, June 12th, 2010, 11 AM,  the 11th Small Sculpture Triennial Fellbach has been opened. Founded in 1980, the internationally acclaimed exhibition celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. The venue, an old wine press with 2800 square meters and a delicate wooden roof, has special charm and character.

After the category of "Small Sculpture" was questioned at the 10th Triennale, the curator Ulrike Groos makes the small size explicitly the topic this time. Exhibition architechture specially created for the presentation of small-format works ensures that the large hall of the old wine press can become the appropriate stage for small sculptures. With works by over 50 international artists, the 11th Triennale "Small Sculpture" Fellbach presents primarily current works, partly relating to historical reference objects. Sculptures and sculptural ensembles are shown as well as videos and movies. Scale of the objects, materials and a range of forms of presentation - in addition to classical sculpture base - play a role.

LARGER THAN LIFE - STRANGER THAN FICTION shows man in his natural environment, multiple social relationships and inner structures, as well as their fragility, especially revealed in fractures and contradictions. Starting from an external perspective on the human condition, the exhibition travels through examination of the world as a whole, nature, urban life worlds and their inhabitants to hidden inner worlds.

From the found object to the technically complex manufactured object, presented in peep shows, installations, and walk-in rooms,  LARGER THAN LIFE - STRANGER THAN FICTION unfolds diverse perspectives, in which familiar things take on appealing, strange or sinister dimensions.

An exhibition catalog (German-English) with 300 pages and numerous figures is available for the price of 24 €.

The exhibition is sponsored by the Land Baden-Württemberg, the Federal Cultural Foundation and the Landesbank Baden-Wuerttemberg.
