Amsterdam as temporary “Global City of Sculptures”
In 2008, Cintha van Heeswijck-Veeger (director) founded the ARTZUID with the aim of drawing attention to the districts of Amsterdam newly designed by architect HP Berlage in 1917. The former plans were known as Plan Zuid, which inspired the name of the festival.
Cintha van Heeswijck-Veeger organized an ambitious exhibition of sculpture of international character. The reputation of the exhibition as a platform for sculpture quickly spread, and the exhibition became one of the leading events in Amsterdam's cultural life. The first ARTZUID attracted over 90,000 visitors!
This year's ARTZUID 2011, the second in the series, presents a total of 50 sculptures by internationally renowned artists in the two major streets in the Berlage neighborhood, Apollolaan and Minervalaan.
The ARTZUID 2011 was curated by Jan Cremer, known as a bestselling author of the 60s. Here he shows himself as a collector of modern and contemporary European art as well as of art of other continents and nations closely associated with the Netherlands as a traditional seafaring and trading nation, such as Ghana, South Africa, Brazil, India, Indonesia, China and Japan. Cremer temporarily transforms Amsterdam into a global city of sculptures.
