Brigitte Kownaz (A) ?Coincidence? in Zürich (CH)

Brigitte Kowanz, Extension, 2008, 178 x 225 x 7 cm, Neon, KMH # 3646

The internationally respected Vienna Artist Brigitte Kowanz (1957) has been honoured with the highest ranked price in Austria the Österreichischen Staatspreis. For Brigitte Kowanz light in its different forms and language are central artistic medias. Häusler Contemporary Zürich presents the single exhibition ?Coincidence? an assembly of newer and latest art.

The effect of the ?Mirrorworks? in the exhibition is due to the used two way mirrors: an at the same time transparent and reflective window dissolves the boundaries between inside and outside. The neon sign on the glass cube ?Beyond Light? reproduces in mirroring and reflections infinitely through the virtual space.

The pieces from the series ?Indirect Transparency ? Indirect Light? the artist combines 2 of the most important inventions: Light bulbs and Television. The way these two are combined challenges our perception and our way of seeing things.

Brigitte Kowanz has been experimenting with this idea since the early 1990?s, to visualise the attribute of the artificial light through the comparison of classic forms of the light bulb and the medial light of the display. Therefore colour gains importance in the latest pieces of the artist: coloured acryl bodies, illuminated by the organic lines on the box. She also included a binary code which can be solved by the spectators.

Despite her formal difference the shown pieces complement each other. They interact together as well as with the spectator and the exhibition place. Some kind of ?Gesamtkunstwerk? emerges, in which the window can be transparent or reflecting, immaterial light becomes material words.

Brigitte Kowanz is Professor at the University ?für angewandte Künste? in Vienna.

The MUMOK Vienna will be devoting a whole exhibition for her in 2010. In September 2006 Prof. Kowanz has been a referent at our international sculpture symposium which took place at the sculpture park in Graz.

The exhibition runs from 28.08. ? 14.11.2009.
