Franck Scurti entered the contemporary art scene in the early 1990s. He quickly gained a reputation as one of the most prolific artists of his generation. His diverse works, which seem to lack a unified style, represent a constantly new confrontation with our time and its problems: geopolitical issues, mass production, consumer society, or even media are Scurtis’ recurring themes. In handling these themes, the artist uses drawings and video as much as sculpture or installation, without hierarchical distinctions between the various genres.
He constantly brings about unexpected encounters among his various sources of inspiration, where he puts details into focus, sets everyday objects in new standards or combines various elements in surprising ways. Scurtis’ works cannot be ascribed to any major category; with their aesthetically pleasing, often playful appearance, they capture the Zeitgeist in a startling and very efficient way.
With around 50 works, mostly specifically created for the exhibition, the show “Works of Chance” gives an overview of Franck Scurtis’ current work. "From Big Bang to Coca-Cola" could be the subtitle of the show; it gives insight into a unique oeuvre which testifies to the lively interest of the artist in modern society with all its excesses, blunders and contradictions.
The catalogue, published by the Museums of the City of Strasbourg, highlights the individual stages of the exhibition project. It contains essays by Jean de Loisy, Frédéric Bonnet, and Estelle Pietrzyk.
