Light as seeing and thinking tool
The Celle Art Museum shows an exhibition of the light artist Mischa Kuball from the collection of Robert Simon.
In the center of media and concept artist Mischa Kuball’s creation is the relationship between space, time and light. In the special exhibition dedicated to him, everything revolves around this theme as well. Kuball tries to explore the interplay of light and architecture, and its impact on people as users of the spaces.
The main work of the exhibition "mies-mies" deals with the pavilion building which Mies van der Rohe created in 1929 for the Universal Exhibition in Barcelona. Due to his novelty and precision, Mies van der Rohe became one of the architectural icons of the 20th Century.
Kuball reproduces and interprets motifs and details in large-sized light boxes, in which the special role of light is expressed. They turn the focus to reflections, refractions and reflexions of light on polished surfaces, that melt together the room or area segments. Insights and perspectives overlap, organized in a grid of light boxes, in the visual quotations from "mies-mies" to create a multilayered "Re-vision" of the structure, and a lucid reflection of the medium of light.
The Museum building itself forms part of the exhibition. The light installation "inhale / exhale" in the foyer is part of the light art cours of the 24-hour art museum, and invites visitors on a nightly stroll around the building. "It also gives further insight into the current special exhibition of Mischa Kuball," says artistic director Robert Simon.
Mischa Kuball (*1959) lives and works in Düsseldorf and is Professor at the Academy of Media Arts in Cologne.
