William Kentridge: Fortuna

This is the most complete monograph yet published on the internationally acclaimed South African artist William Kentridge. Bringing together nearly two hundred of his works made between 1989 and the present day, the book explores Kentridge's work across a wide range of media, including film, video, sculpture, design, drawing and printmaking.

The book presents the artist's dynamic way of working, a creative process that can be seen as a performance, as he searches for a means to express himself. This process of discovery follows the idea of 'fortuna', a principle not subject to rational control but, as Kentridge remarks, one in which there is 'neither programme nor chance in the making of images.'

Alongside this expressive process and resulting artwork are essays by the artist. They offer a personal and lively insight into his psyche and methods of creating, helping to form a complete overview of the artist. Essays from Lilian Tone and Kate McCrickand put Kentridge's practice into a wider context, investigating the conceptual and visual tendencies in his work, and the impact of the social and political situation of 1980s and 1990s South Africa on his work.

With in depth studies of Kentridge and his work, and a personal insight from the artist into his methods, this is a rich comprehensive overview of one of the most significant artists at work today.
